Sharks are a diverse group of mobile predators that forage across varied spatial scales and have the potential to influence food web dynamics. The ecological consequences of recent declines in shark biomass may extend across broader geographic ranges if shark taxa display common behavioural traits. By tracking the original site of photosynthetic fixation of carbon atoms that were ultimately assimilated into muscle tissues of 5,394 sharks from 114 species, we identify globally consistent biogeographic traits in trophic interactions between sharks found in different habitats. We show that populations of shelf-dwelling sharks derive a substantial proportion of their carbon from regional pelagic sources, but contain individuals that forage within additional... |

Accurately characterizing the biology of a pelagic shark species is critical when assessing its status and resilience to fishing pressure. Natural mortality (M) is well known to be a key parameter determining productivity and resilience, but also one for which estimates are most uncertain. While M can be inferred from life history, validated direct estimates are extremely rare for sharks. Porbeagle (Lamna nasus) and shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) are presently overfished in the North Atlantic, but there are no directed fisheries and successful live release of bycatch is believed to have increased. Understanding M, post-release mortality (PRM), and variables that affect mortality are necessary for management and effective bycatch mitigation. From 177... |

An undulate ray (Raja undulata) tagging survey was carried out from the end of 2011 to mid-2014 in the Bay of Biscay with the partnership of the fishing industry. It demonstrates that the undulate ray can be found all along the French coast from the Loire estuary to the Spanish boarder, forming several isolated units, the more important being likely in the central part of the Bay of Biscay (Pertuis Charentais – Gironde area). Even in this latter limited area, the population is structured in sub-units with a low exchange rate between them. This population structure allowed to estimate abundance by mark-recapture in the Gironde estuary, using a Petersen estimate. The conditions that must be respected for such closed population abundance estimate are... |

The follow-up of the activity of the boats practising offshore fishing in the North-West of the La Réunion Cbaies of the Possession and Paul Saint) was carried out over one year(April 86 - March 87) thanks to the application of a strategy of sampling allowing the collection of the following statistics: total effort and by machine, captures total and by species. The study allowed a first approach of the space-time distribution of the activity of the fleet. It reveals the very high participation of the yachtmen in the halieutic exploitation of the studied sector. It also highlights the importance of tunas in the captures, which in weight are largely majority. |

This report is a result of a contract between Ifremer and the French Ministry of Industry. The aim was to map the distribution of the fisheries resources from french scientific surveys. Two areas have been selected: - the "Eastern Channel" area, including 7 administrative departments : Nord, Pas-de-Calais, Somme, Seine-Maritime, Eure, Calvados and Manche. - the "Loire-Gironde" area, including 4 administrative departments : Loire-Atlantique, Vendée, Charente-Maritime and Gironde. |

At the ecosystem level, sustainable exploitation of fisheries resources depends not only on the status of target species but also on that of bycatch species, some of which are even more sensitive to exploitation. This is the case for a number of elasmobranchs (skates, rays and sharks) species whose abundance declined during the 20th century. Further, the biology of elamobranchs is still poorly known and traditional fisheries stock assessment methods using fisheries catches and scientific survey data for estimating abundance are expensive or even inapplicable due to the small numbers observed. The GenoPopTaille project attempts to apply to the case of the thornback ray (Raja clavata) recent genetic-based methods for absolute population abundance estimation... |

In 2000, and after a long period of gestation, an offshore oyster farming experiment, on depths of 10 to 20 meters, started in the Pertuis Charentais. It faced strong opposition from fishermen, without the unanimous support of oyster farmers. In this context, an analysis of the rationalities in place seemed to be able to help to better understand the positions of the various actors. Monographies of fishing and oyster firms have been carried out using methods developed for family farms. Following them, so-called functioning typologies have classified the farms according to their evolution capacities. This part of the study was completed by an analysis of the management system for fisheries and shellfish culture in Pertuis Charentais. It highlighted its weak... |

The authors deal with the coastal fisheries in the Reunion Island. In a first chapter they describe the geographical environment of this island (volcanism, climate, cyclones, hydrology, currents water masses) which has an influence on fisheries results. The second and third chapter describe the commercial species of the Reunion island (pelagic fishes: Scombridae as Thunnus albacares, Katsunonus pelamis, Euthynnus affinis, Thunnus obesus, Gymnosarda unicolor, Thunnus alalunga, other fishes as Xiphias gladius, Makaira mazara, Istiophorus platypterus. The fourth chapter deals with the fishing gears and the catching methods. The fifth chapter is devoted to fishery economics, financing |
