Sharks are a diverse group of mobile predators that forage across varied spatial scales and have the potential to influence food web dynamics. The ecological consequences of recent declines in shark biomass may extend across broader geographic ranges if shark taxa display common behavioural traits. By tracking the original site of photosynthetic fixation of carbon atoms that were ultimately assimilated into muscle tissues of 5,394 sharks from 114 species, we identify globally consistent biogeographic traits in trophic interactions between sharks found in different habitats. We show that populations of shelf-dwelling sharks derive a substantial proportion of their carbon from regional pelagic sources, but contain individuals that forage within additional...

An evaluation of the policy of fishery resources management by TACs in European Community waters from 1983 to 1992 ArchiMer
Biais, Gerard.
In 1983, the European Community (EC) agreed on a system for the conservation and management of fishery resources whi h is based largely on the use of annual total allowable catch (TAC). Nevertheless, the state of many European stocks of demersal species has worsened since 1983. A review of TAC enforcement shows that landings have exceeded TACs to a limited estent for these resources. The contrary is observed for the stocks of pelagic species of which the state has improved although landings have frequently been larger than TACs. This double paradox generates a feeling of limited impact of the TAC system inmplemented by the EC. To investigate the reasons, the closeness between agreed TACs and scientific recommendations has been examined. The results show...

Beyond Post-release Mortality: Inferences on Recovery Periods and Natural Mortality From Electronic Tagging Data for Discarded Lamnid Sharks ArchiMer
Bowlby, Heather D.; Benoît, Hugues P.; Joyce, Warren; Sulikowski, James; Coelho, Rui; Domingo, Andrés; Cortés, Enric; Hazin, Fabio; Macias, David; Biais, Gerard; Santos, Catarina; Anderson, Brooke.
Accurately characterizing the biology of a pelagic shark species is critical when assessing its status and resilience to fishing pressure. Natural mortality (M) is well known to be a key parameter determining productivity and resilience, but also one for which estimates are most uncertain. While M can be inferred from life history, validated direct estimates are extremely rare for sharks. Porbeagle (Lamna nasus) and shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) are presently overfished in the North Atlantic, but there are no directed fisheries and successful live release of bycatch is believed to have increased. Understanding M, post-release mortality (PRM), and variables that affect mortality are necessary for management and effective bycatch mitigation. From 177...

The beach of the meteorological station of Europa Island (Indian Ocean S.W.) is a major nesting site for the green turtle. Altimetric distribution of nests on the beach is such than 95 % of nests are laid in the band located between 1.25 and 3 m above the mean level of upper tides. Nest density is a function of adult females number and varies from 0.175 to 0.043 nest/m2 for the two analyzed nesting seasons. Ground temperatures at 60 cm and 100 cm depth range from 22 (winter) to, 30°C (summer). Interannual variability of ground temperature at same depth (incubation depth) is 1.5° C from extreme hot to cold years. These intra and interannual variations are supposed to have an effect upon the sex-ratio of hatchlings

Robert, Stephane; Evano, Hugues; Arnaud, Christophe; Biais, Gerard.

Biais, Gerard; Taquet, Marc.

Sourget, Quiterie; Biais, Gerard.

Biais, Gerard; Hennache, Cedric; Stephan, Eric; Delamare, Aline.
An undulate ray (Raja undulata) tagging survey was carried out from the end of 2011 to mid-2014 in the Bay of Biscay with the partnership of the fishing industry. It demonstrates that the undulate ray can be found all along the French coast from the Loire estuary to the Spanish boarder, forming several isolated units, the more important being likely in the central part of the Bay of Biscay (Pertuis Charentais – Gironde area). Even in this latter limited area, the population is structured in sub-units with a low exchange rate between them. This population structure allowed to estimate abundance by mark-recapture in the Gironde estuary, using a Petersen estimate. The conditions that must be respected for such closed population abundance estimate are...

Bertrand, Jacques; Biais, Gerard; Taquet, Marc.
The follow-up of the activity of the boats practising offshore fishing in the North-West of the La Réunion Cbaies of the Possession and Paul Saint) was carried out over one year(April 86 - March 87) thanks to the application of a strategy of sampling allowing the collection of the following statistics: total effort and by machine, captures total and by species. The study allowed a first approach of the space-time distribution of the activity of the fleet. It reveals the very high participation of the yachtmen in the halieutic exploitation of the studied sector. It also highlights the importance of tunas in the captures, which in weight are largely majority.

GenoPopTaille. Moving stock assessment into the future ArchiMer
Marandel, Florianne; Biais, Gerard; Bidault, Adeline; Charrier, Grégory; Cornette, Florence; Lapegue, Sylvie; Laroche, Jean; Le Cam, Sabrina; Stephan, Eric; Trenkel, Verena; Lorance, Pascal.
At the ecosystem level, sustainable exploitation of fisheries resources depends not only on the status of target species but also on that of bycatch species, some of which are even more sensitive to exploitation. This is the case for a number of elasmobranchs (skates, rays and sharks) species whose abundance declined during the 20th century. Further, the biology of elamobranchs is still poorly known and traditional fisheries stock assessment methods using fisheries catches and scientific survey data for estimating abundance are expensive or even inapplicable due to the small numbers observed. The GenoPopTaille project attempts to apply to the case of the thornback ray (Raja clavata) recent genetic-based methods for absolute population abundance estimation...

Biais, Gerard; Chia, Eduardo; Darbon, Dominique; Tachoires, Stephanie; Favoreu, Guillaume; Deglise, Caroline; Dupin, Benoit; Guerin, Benoit; Letellier, Nicolas.
In 2000, and after a long period of gestation, an offshore oyster farming experiment, on depths of 10 to 20 meters, started in the Pertuis Charentais. It faced strong opposition from fishermen, without the unanimous support of oyster farmers. In this context, an analysis of the rationalities in place seemed to be able to help to better understand the positions of the various actors. Monographies of fishing and oyster firms have been carried out using methods developed for family farms. Following them, so-called functioning typologies have classified the farms according to their evolution capacities. This part of the study was completed by an analysis of the management system for fisheries and shellfish culture in Pertuis Charentais. It highlighted its weak...
